Manu National Park comprises 19,000 KM2 of the best preserve forest in the southeast of Peru since 1977; is also one of the most important conservation units in the world!! The beauty of this trip is the big variety of habitats the traveler experience from upper montane forest laden with delicate orchids and bromeliads to pristine Amazon rainforest. Manu has a list of almost 1000 species of birds, 13 monkey species, the last refuge of the endangered Giant River Otter, the second largest macaw clay lick and endless areas for forest walks and canopy platforms making this area a naturalist dream. Early departure, setting off to explore the famous Manu National Park, driving along the famous Manu Road know as one of the finest birding roads in the world, we make selected stops on the way to find target birds like the peruvian endemics Creamy Crested Spinetail, Chesnut breasted Mountain Finch, and the gorgeous Bearded Mountaineer, as we reach the mountain pass of Ajanacu 12000 ft official entrance to the Manu National Park the habitat change is quiet dramatic, we admire beautiful elfin forest, upper montane forest laden with delicate orchids here a handfull of species like
Hooded, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanagers, Rufous-capped Thornbill, Graybreasted
Mountain-Toucan, Chesnut crested Cotinga and more, our destination is the cloud forest of Manu, the birding along this road is quiet spectacular, mixed-species flocks may produce Masked, Moustached, Deepblue Flower-Piercers, Crimsom-mantled Woodpecker, Strong-billed Woodcreeper, Golden-collared Tanager and the list goes on; as we approach our inn we keep our eyes wide open for Andean guans and Highland Motmot as it gets dark we have good chances to spot Lyre Tailed Nightjar.Arrival to our comfortable lodge at(5,000ft) and overnight.(B, Box-lunch, D)
At cloud forest for birding, this gives us the change to enjoy probably the most accessible Lek of Andean Cock of the Rocks a beautiful dweller of this forests and the national bird of Peru, we hope to spot some males at their morning mating rituals at nearby Lek. Enjoy superb birding with colorful tanagers, hummingbirds like Violet-fronted Brilliant, Green Hermit, Wirecrested Thorntail, Speckled etc. others include woodpeckers, furnarids and much more. Early breakfast, drive down road to our next location the foothills of Manu at Amazonia Lodge, and old tea and citrus farm hacienda, run by a local family having an incredible list of over 600 species of birds .This drive will give us the chance to experience a whole set of birds the possibilities include Golden-collared Honeycreepers, Golden-bellied Warbler, bamboo specialties like Warbling Antbird, Striped-chested Antwren, Chesnut-backed Antshrike, and others.Middle afternoon arrival to Atalaya where we will take a short boat trip across the upper Madre de Dios river to our next inn Amazonia Lodge. On arrival lodge trail exploration including some bamboo patches excellent for several species of antbirds. We will also dedicate some of our time to bird from lodge porch in the hope to spot some of the 18 species of hummingbirds that visit the verbena flowers and feeders at lodge clearing the possibilities include the gorgeous Rufus-crested Coquette, White-necked Jacobin, the endemic Koepcke’s Hermit, Golden-tailed Sapphire and more. It is certainly magical to be awaken by so many birds calling, we will dedicate the first morning hours to enjoy easy birding at lodge clearing before breakfast, excellent for a number of species like Blue-headed Parrots, Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper, several species of tanagers, woodpeckers and more. Breakfast, rest of morning lodge trail exploration including some bamboo patches excellent for several species of antbirds. We will also take our time to enjoy the porch that is overlooking lodge garden, where several feeders had been carefully set along with verbenas, heliconias where up to 18 species of hummingbirds can be seen, some of them include the gorgeous Rufus-crested Coquete, the endemic Koepckes Hermit, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Long-billed Starthroat, Golden-tailed Sapphire, White-necked Jacobin and the list goes on. Early morning hours dedicated to bird lodge clearing, breakfast and morning boat trip on the Upper Mother of God River to our next location, the lowlands of Manu. During our journey good chances to spot river-side species such as Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Kingfishers, Large and Yellow-billed Terns, Horned Screamers, Pied Plover, Collared Plover, Orinoco Goose also good for birds of prey as well as mammals. Middle afternoon arrival to Manu Wildlife Center on time to do some night birding. Early departure from lodge for a 30 minutes boat ride to the Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick, spectacular exposed river bank where hundreds of parrots gather to eat the mineral rich clay, this is certainly an incredible spectacle of nature seen by very few, some species include the gorgeous Blue-headed and Orange-cheeked Parrots, the larger amazons Yellow-crowned and Mealy Parrots, small visitors include Tui, Cobalt-winged and White-eyed Parakeets, the area is also visited by the large Red and Green Macaws, all seen from a very convenient blind about 200 feet from exposed river bank. After a delicious breakfast we set off for a 30 minutes boat trip to Blanco Oxbow-lake good spot for Purus Jacamar, Pale-eyed Black-bird, the bizarre looking Hoatzins, several species of flycatchers and others. Middle afternoon hike to canopy tower at lodge, this will enable us to see seldom seen birds from the forest floor, that includes cotingas, colorful tanagers, toucans, fly overs of parrots and macaws and much more.. The forest in certainly different at night, night birding will give us the chance to observe rather shy birds, possibilities include Amazonian Pigmy Owl, Tawny-bellied Screech

Early morning departure from lodge to gold mining town Colorado (3 hours by boat from lodge) from where we have to take a 3 and a half hour drive to Puerto Maldonado on time to be on an afternoon flight back to Lima or Cusco.
