Peru is a country with amazing contrasts: From the world’s richest oceanic currents, over the world’s highest tropical mountain chain to the basin of the world’s largest river.

MALAGA PASS AND POLYLEPIS SPECIALTIES 1d

The famous Malaga Pass offers the unique opportunity to bird one of the rarest and threatened ecosystems on earth, the Polylepis Woodlands. As we start our early drive along the Cusco-La Convencion road and as the pass is reach a short walk is requiered to get to the patch of Polylepis, a 4-5 hours easy hike down to valley floor is necessary to explore this unique andean habitat and its highly habitat-specialized birds, unfortunately this endemic andean habitat is quickly disappearing because of selective cutting for fire-wood. The birds we expect to find include Ash- breasted Tit-Tyrant (endemic), Royal Cinclodes (endemic), White-browed Tit-Spinetail (endemic), Tawny Tit-Spinetail, Striped- headed Antpitta, Giant Conebill, Cordilleran Canastero, Black Siskin, Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant, Lined-fronted Canastero, Tit-like Dacnis, Blue-mantled Thornbill, Thick-billed Siskin, Andean Condor and others.

URUBAMBA AND LUCUMAYU VALLEYS BIRDING HIGHLIGHTS 3d

This brand new tour focuses in the wonderful avian diversity of the high mountains of the Urubamba range in the andes with its highest point the Malaga Pass (14,200 ft) and the very little known Lucumayu Valley.
The high elevation plains, boggy áreas, grasslands, elfin forest, upper montane and tropical cloud forest provide the myriads of hábitats that holds various specialties and endemics . Hummingbirds, flycatchers, canasteros, fruiteaters, colorful tanagers and more can be spotted along this route . Polylepis woodlands with their red peeling bark are certainly unique to the Andes and holds highly specialized avifauna. Various days are spend exploring these unique hábitats in search of these colorful creatures.
This trip starts and ends in the colorful and very happening little community of Ollantaytambo, nights will be spend at the grounds of the Pacha Conservancy Project on the Lucumayu Valley, the Project Works with environmmental education and reforestation.
